Pre-Writing Assignment 1

This photograph caught my eye because of the colors in the sunset and the little girl just standing there by herself. I’ve always been attracted to sunset photos, especially if they take place on a lake. I have always been entranced with how the sunset reflects off the water. The colors the sun can create are always so beautiful. I have always wondered how the sun is able to create the rich, deep colors it does.

The little girl in the picture looks as if she may have been boating with her family that day. In front of her is what appears to be a sand castle in the making. This gives me the impression that she is there with family or friends. She appears to be a girl who is quite young, maybe four or five, so she wouldn’t be at the beach all by herself, especially at sunset. Also, the way she is looking out on the lake brings some questions to mind. Is she wanting to be back out on the water? Is she simply looking at the boat? Or maybe she just wants to see the sunset across the water. You can’t really be sure what she is looking at or who she is there with, but you can make plenty of inferences.

The landscape in this photo is very beautiful. The lake is very simple looking and appears to be a smaller lake, but it is absolutely gorgeous with the way the sun is hitting it. There is a visible tree line in the background, which is one of the reasons you can infer the lake is a smaller one. There appears to be a couple of docks on this lake, which gives you an idea that it is possibly a private lake where families own their own dock or something of the sort. One of the docks appears to be vacant, while the other is occupied by what looks like a speedboat. This boat could possibly belong to the family of the little girl in the photo, or it could belong to somebody else. One can’t really tell by the angle or arrangement of this photo.

The elements presented in this photo give me a sense of calmness and peacefulness. The rich tones in the colors of the sunset are very calming and give the photo more of a sense of serenity. The way the water looks, so calm with hardly any ripples, makes me want to go out to a beach of some sort and just be alone and take time to be with my thoughts. The atmosphere in the photo is so quiet. It creates the perfect place to go and take a book and read or do whatever quiet, alone hobby you have. Even the little girl gives off a quiet and peaceful vibe. She doesn’t look overly active or playful. She just looks like the day is coming to an end after a relaxing day on the beach. The photo is very inviting to me.

Weekly Blog Post 7

Art in general has always been a great interest of mine. It was one of the few extracurricular activities I was good at in high school. Photography was never something I had much experience with, though. I like to mess around with my mom’s camera, but I don’t really know a whole lot about the various settings. I would really like to take more photography classes and eventually learn how to develop my own pictures and whatnot, but until then I just like to mess around.

I don’t really have much knowledge of photography, other than various photographers whose photos I enjoy. I’ve always been a big fan of Ansel Adams. His photography has always looked very interesting to me. Dorthea Lange has also been a photographer whose works I’ve enjoyed. Her photography is very interesting to me and always has a very good message behind it. It’s very inspirational in a way. It is depressing in others, but either way it always seems to have a message behind it.

My interest in photography is great. I am always intrigued by photography and could look at it all day long if I was given the chance. I love looking at the way the photographer catches the moment in the photo and looking in various angles to see how the photo could change. Some photographers have an uncanny ability to capture photos at just the right time and they create the coolest photos. I have friend who’s aunt loves to take photographs and has her own blackroom in her house. Some of the photos she captures at the various sporting events are some of the coolest photos I have ever seen. The way she captures the movement of a softball as it leaves the pitchers hand is just unreal to me. To think that someone can capture that moment and keep it forever is a talent I have always wanted to have. I hope to someday enroll in classes and, in time, be able to do these things as well.
